Asperger’s Disorder Transitioning
High-school students diagnosed with Asperger’s or high-functioning autism are particularly vulnerable to the stress of transitioning to college. Without sufficient preparation and support, the student will fail to adjust to the college environment even though his academic skills may be strong, and drop out of college.
Deborah will help the student develop the self-awareness and skills needed to support the transition to college. She will help the student to recognize the social/interpersonal and executive functioning limitations of Asperger's and develop strategies to cope.
Relative to the particular struggles with social interaction, Deborah offers a social thinking curriculum, developed by Michelle Garcia Winner, to help the student transitioning to college to enhance their awareness of the social challenges and to adopt strategies to cope with these challenges.
